Two new songs were debuted for the first time ever during the South American shows on the 2004 tour. The show opener Bullet and Speed of Dark. Bullet featured vocals from both 3D and Dot Allison, but was dropped after the South American leg of the tourwhen Massive Attack moved back to Europe. Bullet would eventually be released in 2006 under the name United Snakes. The other new song debuted was Speed Of Dark, which featured vocals from Dot Allison for the early part of the tour, but then those were dropped turning the song into just an instrumental. Speed Of Dark would end up being played for the entirety of the 2004 tour. So far, this song has not been released on record. Neither song has been played live since the 2004 tour.
The lighting backdrops and production values afforded for this small South American leg of the 2004 tour were limited. This fact is noticeable upon examing any photos from these dates, by discovering that the LED screen deviced by UVA for the 2004 tour was absent for these five South American dates. Instead just simple backlighting and coloured spotlights were used instead. The LED screen for the 2004 tour (which was also different from the screen employed on the 2003 tour), would not make it’s first appearance until the first of the European dates which was at the Super Rock Festival in Lisbon, Portugal on the 14th June. The reason why Massive Attack decided to omit the LED screen from the South American dates was almost certainly an issue do with the money required to transport the screen across the Atlantic. This same issue is also what prevented an North American tour in 2003.
Massive Attack’s last South American date before 2004 had been at the Sesi Theater, Porto Alegre, Brazil on the 17th October 1998.
