Select a year
This eventful year marked the release of Massive Attack's first proper album in four years, Mezzanine, which in time would go on to be prehaps their most critically acclaimed and commercially successful album ever. A world tour to promote the album would ensue that would take Massive Attack all across the globe, while at the same three singles from the album (with the most notable being Teardrop) would be released throughout the year.
With the Mezzanine world tour still in full swing, this year would prove to be an exhausting year for Massive Attack, with the never-ending tour schedule bringing out the bad blood between the band members particulary with 3D and Mushroom, which had been there for the last number of years to the fore. This would accumulate with Mushroom leaving Massive Attack this year.
This would be a pretty quiet year, events-wise as Massive Attack regrouped to consider how to go about making the next album, following the departure of Mushroom. Recording sessions for the album at Ridge Farm would begin with the band Lupine Howl. Massive Attack's first and only live webcast to their fans would happen towards the end of this year to coincide with the internet only release of a new track Nature Of Threat.
Massive Attack spent much of this year trying to make sense of the Lupine Howl sessions from the previous year. With frustration mounting in the studio, Daddy G would ultimately leave the studio indefintely leaving 3D and Neil Davidge alone to make the album. Towards the end of the year, the Eleven Promos DVD was released containing all of Massive Attack's videos from Daydreaming up to Inertia Creeps.
This was the year were the vast majority of Massive Attack's yet to titled fourth album, 100th Window would made over a 8/9 month period following a return to the studio in January by 3D and Neil Davidge to write the album again from the beginning effectively dropping the Lupine Howl sessions entirely. This was also the year when 3D would first throw his weigth behind the anti-war movement being led by his friend Damon Albarn.
A momentous year for Massive Attack with the release of 100th Window, their first album in nearly five years. The rest of the year would be taken up with mostly touring and promoting the album around the world. Two singles from the album would also be released, those being Special Cases and Butterfly Caught.
While maybe not as busy as the previous year, this year would see Massive Attack undertake a follow-up tour to the 100th Window tour, touring mostly festival. In between this they found the time to release their first film soundtrack for movie, Danny The Dog. There would be some musical related activity from Daddy G with the release of his DJ Kicks compilation album.
Portishead would make their live return in seven years sharing a stage with Massive Attack this year at the Crisis In Asia Tsunami gigs held in Bristol. Massive Attack would release another soundtrack exclusive to Itunes for the film, Bullet Boy and in a unexpected twist at the end of the year, 3D would announce the intention of the band to release a "Best Of" album called Collected and tour extensively next year.
The big thing this year was the release of Collected, a retrospective chronicling the last 15 years of Massive Attack. To promote it, a single called Live With Me and a world tour was put in place, with Massive Attack finally returning to play live in North America after eight years.
