U.N.K.L.E - War Stories (Special Edition) (Instrumental)
9th July 2007
05:17
Instrumental - An instrumental mix of Twilight exactly the same as the original remix sans main lead vocals of 3D. Interestingly this version leaves the backing vocals of Neil Davidge still present, allowing the listener to hear his voice clearly, even if it is mixed quite low in volume. Included only on the special edition of U.N.K.L.E’s War Stories album.
Layo and Bushwacka! Remix - A more dance beat oriented interpretation of the track by UK breakbeat and house DJ’s Layo and Bushwacka!. 3D’s vocals are removed in this version even though Neil Davidge’s backing vocals seem to be still present. Only appears on a rare promo CD/12″ release that came out in August 2008 known as Remix Stories, which contained other remixes from U.N.K.L.E’s War Stories album.

Much of the same history that surrounds the previous Massive Attack/U.N.K.L.E collaboration from 2003 called Invasion, also pertains equally as well to this new entry. Twilight is again another continuation of the mutual respect and friendship between 3D and U.N.K.L.E’s main man, James Lavelle which made their first (besides some other remix work) proper collaboration, Invasion, possible in the first place. he new song Twilight itself, was recorded sometime in the last two months of 2006, just shortly after the 2006 tour had ended and Massive Attack had returned home to Bristol.
3D’s contribution to the U.N.K.L.E’s War Stories album was more than just the one song Twilight. He was also asked by James Lavelle to contribute his own paintings ans sketches for inclusion in a special 50 page album booklet that was apart of the packaging for the special edition release of War Stories. Ben Dury, was the man responible for the art direction and design of the album and manlipulated and redesigned 3D’s artwork in some cases. All of 3D’s artwork for this project was brand new and never seen before except for four images that were previously seen on the No Bomb website which were released earlier in the same year 2007.
An instrumental intro to Twilight was played throughout the U.N.K.L.E live tour in 2007. It was only a brief sample (no more than a minute) of Twilight that was played before it segued into another U.N.K.L.E song called In A State. At this time, 3D has yet to join U.N.K.L.E live on stage to perform Twilight, or Invasion either for that matter.
Ben Dury on 3D’s artistic contribution to U.N.K.L.E’s War Stories - “3D was comissioned to paint the cover image, in the end he used the whole exercise as a way back into painting (I don’t think he’d done any for a number of years) a had a bit of overall direction from James Lavelle but essentially he produced a substantial body of work [enough for the whole album]. I then shot it all digitally, selected the images then retouched and recoloured them all” [UNKLE.com - June 2007]
