26th September 2006 - Riviera Theater, Chicago, USA
As this was my first time to the Riviera I was pleased to see it was surprisingly similar to the state theatre in Detroit (where I still wish they would reschedule) crusty old theater feel that I love. very small venue. I know some of you folks are a big crowd sort but this was just my cuppa tea. Of course got there early soas to procure a good spot. chicago traffic did not help matters (nor did the last minute car repair!!) but when I got there only one person stood between me and the stage. I managed to slip a tiny camera in and as soon as i can get the bastard thing installed I’ll see if I got anything worthy to post. anyways $9.- and one vodka tonic later things were still lookin a bit slim as far as the crowd goes. The dj (and forgive me I didn’t catch his name) came on and did his thing. nothing earthshattering but good.the best part was toward the end when he did some fun microphone tricks. whata cutie too…. anyways I digress.
Drugged or drunk girls aside the crowd was pretty friendly and we all were getting on well. At set up they taped the lists down on stage in front of me and i relayed the line-up to the fellas behind me, filled em in on who’s who as far as singers go. we got a little overtly long display of chicago trivia on the screens before the band was ready but hey, we’ll forgive em that right? oh, an they spelled united states wrong - not that it matters but gave us a chuckle.(who am I to comment on another’s typo’s?!) really guys, this was fabulous - from the opening to the final cast call before they left the stage.everyone on stage and in front of it seemed to be havin a great time. got to see the whole dancing thing that many have been talking about (D that’s so damned cute) Horace was fantastic, Debra kicked ass as usual- and Elizabeth? what can I say… beautiful - Terry took the cake. He was amazing as with the other shows G was absent and though I do love the flavor he adds to the mix i was not dissappoited in the least. I could not understand the spoken vocals. and the sung vocals were a tad quiet but all else seemed good.a friend of mine that went and was closer to the back said the bass was too loud (is there such a thing?) and said the vocals were also too quiet but he is one of those glass half empty sorts and would have found something wrong anyway (sorry Nathan but it’s true) Angelo was fantastic. Crunchy awesome guitar made my heavy metal husband that tagged along very happy. Winston seemed into the groove in the best way.the others did an excellent job as usual. Don’t know what to tell you really other than I was blown away.worth risking our lives driving back home at 3AM swerving from sleepyness. I’d do it again anytime.
Review by Astral from the Official Massive Attack Forum dated 28th September 2006
This show was one of the few shows played during 2006, which included Live With Me on the setlist, as Terry Callier was present for this date, probably because Chicago is his hometown. This would also be the last time Live With Me would be played live on this tour.
The official site for the Riviera Theater is located here.
