Indeterminable
Much like “Silent Spring” this is a work-in-progress unfinished song recorded sometime during 2005, that was included on the special edition of Collected. It marks the first and only collaboration thusfar between Massive Attack and singer Debbie Clare, lead vocalist of the Brighton-based electronic band Oom. Debbie had first got in contact with Massive Attack when she was fortunate enough to get a demo tape of her’s, heard by 3D after she had passed it along to him when attending Massive Attack’s Brixton Academy shows in London during 2004. 3D who had been suitably impressed by what had been on the demo, got in touch with her shortly afterwards, and thus began the collaboration.
Debbie Clare’s vocals in Joy Luck Club much like Elizabeth Fraser on Silent Spring are meant to be deliberately indecipherable even though they are sung in English, the lyrics are really up to the interpertation of the listener to decide what is being sung.
Joy Luck Club has never once been played live.
