This promo video is not actually a song by Massive Attack at all, but by U.N.K.L.E and is included here in this videography because 3D had close ties to the development of the video itself supervising the unique designs and artwork seen in the promo. Many of these designs would be familiar to Massive Attack fans as they incorperate artwork that has been seen before on Massive Attack’s prior albums, such as the Eurochild and the Insect President.
3D’s involement in this project came about as with all the other collaborations between himself and U.N.K.L.E over the years, from his friendship with U.N.K.L.E’s main man, James Lavelle.
Earlier on in the video’s production, James Lavelle of U.N.K.L.E suggested to 3D did he want to add his own musical contribution to the song, but 3D declined saying the song was perfect the way it was, and that he would just work on the visuals for the video instead.
The acclaimed animation studio, Shynola would take 3D’s visual ideas for the video and translate them into the anti-war statement of the final video. 3D has since expressed a desire to work with Shynola again, next time on a Massive Attack song. There was a possiblty in 2003, that Antistar might have recieved a single release. If this had happened then Shynola, would have probably produced the video for it in the same style as Eye For An Eye.
The completed Eye For An Eye video debuted to a public audience for the first time on the 4th August 2002 at the Edinburgh Film Festival. The video would get it’s own exclusive DVD release the year after. This DVD would also feature an interview with 3D discussing his involvement with making the video.
David Durrell, who is part of U.N.K.L.E’s management - “First and foremost it was intended as an anti-war statement. The idea is to release this as a film, rather than a promo. It’s not about selling millions of records - it’s about making a statement” [U.N.K.L.E PR – July 2002]
Jason Groves of Shynola - “It may be released as an anti war statement, although it was never intended to be one (sept11 happened during production). It could be taken to be anti war, but it’s really just about aggression…..if anything. We never set out to make ’statements’, we just do things that we think might be interesting to us and others (as wanky as that sounds)” [Creative Magazine – August 2002]
