9th June 2006 - Karaiskaki Stadium, Athens, Greece
That was quite a different show overall. It missed Horace’s contribution. If he was there, it would have been a more complete Massive Attack show. There was Liz to take the hypnotizer’s role anyway. And that was an experience itself. The Siren, lured you with her sublime vocals as expected, but her modesty and innocence are those simple characteristics that make you respect/love/adore her even more. Like a creature from another world, yet so real, so original…couldn’t believe my ears, especially on stumbling a little…AAAAH! D was the leading power, he looked serious, a real professional, but when needed, he’d add so much passion to it! So erotic on Karmacoma…Butterfly Caught and Future Proof was a pain in the heart though. Hehe, he plays dangerous games with your mind, he reminds you feelings you’re trying to forget or pretend they’re not there. Not only by uttering those particular lyrics, but his performance, his stance. I don’t know, I’m really happy that this man exists. I hope he’ll always be with us, the man does social work!
I was also happy to see G more participant on stage than the previous times. Not a leader himself, but his coolness brings some balance to D’s tension. He’s so essential! The biggest surprise was Heat Miser! Horace’s absence should be filled with something really special, so… ….and Karmacoma was so special, the best I’ve heard so far. Now Debbie…Safe from harm was outstanding, with Angelo doing his own show with an amazing solo and all, but..poor girl, she came out to sing Unfinished, the first notes began, the crowd got crazy and then…nothing! Something happened there, they were all on the run, but nothing was heard. Everyone was like…’Nooo!, Not now!’ Then they left for a couple of minutes, while we were anticipated with anguish. Then the guys fixed the problem and finally she came to sing it. That ‘mistake’ obsessed the fans even more…If you omit this, the sound was great, much better than 2003, but would like to see them at Lycabettus next time. It’s a magic place, much better than a football stadium.
Although I’d brought Mezzanine cd with me, I didn’t even try to get backstage. I met them at Brixton back in 2004 and all I had to say was a simple “Thank You”. When you communicate with someone mentally through their music, there’s no much to say really, that’s how I see it anyway, especially when you’re a bit shocked from the whole thing you have just seen and a little stoned too! Anyway! It was a great night, I hope everyone had a great time, but please we need 2 encores next time, okay?
Review by emily from the Official Massive Attack Forum dated 10th June 2006
The setlist for this show, like the previous night and next few handful of shows on the 2006 tour is quite unique. Horace Andy could’nt make the start of the European leg of the 2006 tour because of any injury he sustained he in his homeland of Jamica. This forced Massive Attack to get slightly creative with their usual setlist by adding an instrumental version of Incantations (an alternative version of Everywhen) and also Heat Miser onto the setlist.
